Dear Families,
Fall is in full swing at East Harlem Tutorial Program, and our educators and scholars are busy working together on the important business of learning. Across classrooms, educators are raising the bar for our scholars, pushing our students not only to be “on task,” but to be fully engaged in activities that require them to think and express their ideas.

For our families, I know you’re seeing your children bring home
assignments that involve more writing and creative problem-solving. I encourage you to ask your children what they’re learning about in school, and to ask questions that require them to explain their thinking.
This fall, we’ve also made a big push at all three of our campuses to raise student attendance, since we know that students can only make the kind of academic progress we strive for when they’re in their classrooms learning every day. As a result, I’m excited to report that average daily attendance across the network is now at 89%, which is up from last year’s network average of 77%.
We still have a little way to go to meet our goal of at least 90% attendance, but we have made huge improvements thanks to the efforts of our school teams and all of you. Thank you for making sure that your children attend the full school day every day, unless they are sick or have some other unavoidable conflict. Being present in school consistently is the first step toward achieving all of their academic goals, and we could not do it without your active involvement!
Warmly,

Bullying Prevention Month
In October, our scholars celebrated kindness and recognized Bully Prevention Month. Our 6th-8th-grade scholars stepped in as guest readers for PK-5th classes, sharing stories and teaching our little ones about bullying prevention.
A big thanks to our East Harlem Scholars Academy social work team, Hailey, Diamond, and Zuleyka, for making these sweet and instructional interactions happen.

Spirit Week

In October, scholars at Scholars Academy participated in Spirit Week, dressing up in different themes such as Decades Day and Super Hero Day, closing out the month by wearing their fun and cool costumes even though it was not exactly on Halloween due to the heavy storms.

Last week at East Harlem Scholars Academy II, it was the staff's turn for Spirit Week! The team showed their spirit by dressing up for themes like All Black Day and Decades Day. It was a fun surprise for our scholars, who shared plenty of laughs seeing their teachers participating in a "secret" spirit week.

First Annual College Fair

A big shoutout to our wonderful scholars who showed up big for our first-ever East Harlem Scholars Academies College Fair in mid-October. Fifteen colleges, including CUNY, SUNY, and private options, were represented, and over 100 students from our high school, plus additional students who participate in our high school OST programs, attended—an incredible turnout!
So many of them left feeling excited after connecting with the colleges, realizing that college is coming up quickly, and their future is looking bright.

East Harlem Walking Tour
In early October, East Harlem Tutorial Program staff had the opportunity to tour the streets of East Harlem with local historian Christopher Bell. Some of the attractions we covered as we walked toward Central Park included: the stately Museum of the City of New York, El Museo del Barrio, and the iconic "The Spirit of East Harlem" mural.
The architecture tells a story of the community, with historic brownstones standing alongside large-scale public housing, all punctuated by community gardens tucked into empty lots.

Puerto Rican Bomba Music Comes to EHTP
Our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration was a beautiful success, and we couldn't have done it without you! A huge thank you to all the scholars, families, and staff who participated.
The night came alive thanks to our incredible scholars and their performance of traditional Puerto Rican Bomba music—you were amazing! And of course, a special thanks to Mr. Clements for his fantastic talent on the drums.
What made the event truly special was seeing everyone dancing and learning together. East Harlem’s vibrant diversity, especially its strong Puerto Rican community, is something we deeply value. Thank you for honoring the rich history and culture of all Hispanic countries with us.
