DECEMBER 2025 NEWSLETTER

A message from our CEO

Dear Families,

This holiday season, I want to express how grateful we at EHTP are for your partnership and engagement in the important work of ensuring your children receive a high-quality education that truly sets them up for a lifetime of success. It was heartwarming to see so many of you step up his last month, volunteering your time at our community feasts, winter coat drive, and turkey giveaway. Your willingness to invest time to support your neighbors underscores the power and primacy of community at EHTP.

I was also happy to see so many of you at parent-teacher conference nights at all three campuses; taking the time to make sure you’re informed about your children’s academic strengths and needs for support is a critical step to ensuring their success at school. And even for those of you who haven’t physically visited one of our campuses in the last month, please know that we recognize all you do to support your children’s education at home, whether through making sure they have their uniforms every day, getting them to school on time, checking their homework, or even just telling them how important their education is to you. All of your efforts to partner with us as champions of your children’s learning make a huge difference, and we deeply appreciate you.

I wish you and your families a joyful holiday season filled with light and love, and I look forward to a wonderful new year working alongside you to support our scholars.

Warmly,

Marina Cofield

EAST HARLEM SCHOLARS ACADEMY

A Season of Gratitude

East Harlem Scholars Academy kicked off the holiday season by gathering as a community for a special Thanksgiving meal. Bringing together families, staff, and our wonderful scholars, the event offered a meaningful moment for us all to pause and connect.

It was a time for teachers and parents alike to relax and fully share in the spirit of gratitude. We were incredibly moved by the dozens of family members who volunteered to serve the food. Their involvement turned the gathering into a true celebration of the EHTP family.

EAST HARLEM SCHOLARS ACADEMY II

Serving with Joy

East Harlem Scholars Academy II also brought families, staff, and scholars together for a delicious community feast before the Thanksgiving holiday. The event placed a special focus on service, with staff members taking the lead to serve meals to our families and scholars.

The atmosphere was joyful and relaxed. Scholars were all smiles, enjoying quality time with their classmates and loved ones over a warm plate. It was a wonderful opportunity for the staff to show appreciation for the community they serve. The event truly highlighted the strong bonds that make our school feel like home.

EAST HARLEM SCHOLARS ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL

Honor Roll Breakfast, Celebrating Excellence

In November, East Harlem Scholars Academy High School proudly hosted an Honor Roll Breakfast to recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement thus far this year. Families, teachers, and staff gathered to celebrate the dedication and hard work these scholars bring to the classroom every day.

The event was filled with applause and pride as we honored their commitment to maintaining high standards. It was a wonderful way to start the day, reinforcing that academic focus and resilience are core values of our community. We are incredibly proud of these scholars for setting the bar high and inspiring their peers.

 High School Scholars Say Thanks

Community and gratitude came first at our recent Scholars Academy High School meal. Scholars took the opportunity to share their gratitude for their family, friends, and food. The meal was made even more special as scholars were served by their own teachers and Principal Swaby. It was a beautiful moment of connection for the whole school.

 DEVELOPMENT

Annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Raises 180K For EHTP

Our 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was a slam dunk, raising $180,000 for EHTP scholars and families! A huge congratulations goes to our back-to-back champions, PwC, and to Pro Reps Outreach for a hard-fought second-place finish.

We want to thank every player, volunteer, and fan who showed up to make the night unforgettable. Your energy and generosity are creating real, lasting opportunities for students across East Harlem.

 PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

500 Turkeys Distributed to Community

On November 22, East Harlem Tutorial Program came together to distribute 500 turkeys along with produce and other Thanksgiving dinner ingredients during our annual Turkey Giveaway. This event highlights our ongoing commitment to supporting EHTP families and residents during the holiday season.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Butter Beans Kitchen for their continued partnership and to our incredible volunteers for their service. A special thanks also goes to our Public Engagement team for organizing such a meaningful day for our community.

OUT OF SCHOOL TIME

Building on New Cooking Skills and Engineering Challenge Accepted

Our OST scholars honed their skills in two dynamic hands-on sessions. Culinary instructor Chef T led a group in her weekly cooking challenge, refining scholars' chopping and sautéing techniques.

Meanwhile, the BOND group from City College of New York and Harlem Design Gallery hosted a special engineering workshop, challenging our scholars to construct stable towers using pasta, marshmallows, and engineering design.

 PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

Coat Drive and Give Away Success

EHTP is incredibly grateful for the love and support shown during our annual coat drive. A huge shout-out goes to our Public Engagement team and Parent Volunteers for doing the heavy lifting to make the giveaway happen!

Thanks to Nightingale Bamford School, Handelsbanken, and our amazing community donors, we were able to collect and donate over 300 coats. This generosity brings real warmth to our families and reminds us of the power of coming together.

 EAST HARLEM TEACHING RESIDENCY

Alumni Survey Points to Success of Mission-Driven Work

Recent data from an alumni survey done by the East Harlem Teaching Residency demonstrates the lasting and positive impact of the program. The results show that 85% of the alumni, dating back to 2015, are still teaching, largely within New York City, serving the very communities that shaped them.

For over a decade, we have remained steadfast in prioritizing residents who truly reflect our student body, a commitment that sets us apart in the field. Year after year, the Teaching Residency far outpaces both NYC DOE and national statistics in preparing a diverse and community-rooted teacher pipeline. While the survey focused on educational outcomes, we also celebrate the undeniable impact we have on economic mobility.

Launching educators of color and first-generation graduates into stable, mission-driven careers creates positive ripple effects that extend well beyond the school walls. Ultimately, these findings confirm that our residency is not just successfully training teachers but empowering our community as a whole.  Check out the report HERE.
