OCTOBER 2025 NEWSLETTER

A message from our CEO

Dear Families,

Now that the school year is well underway, it’s wonderful to see how well our scholars have settled into their classroom routines and are diving into the important business of learning! One thing we’re working on across all grades and schools this year is ensuring that scholars are engaged in meaningful thinking in every lesson – not just busywork or rote memorization of basic facts.  Teachers are encouraging this

higher-level thinking by having scholars write about their ideas, explain their answers, and discuss what they're learning with their classmates. You can support this effort at home, too, by asking your children questions like “why do you think that?,” “how do you know that?”, and “what’s another way to explain that?” By discussing ideas with your children and helping them see things from different perspectives, you help us build critical thinking skills that will serve them well all the way from kindergarten through college. As always, you are our most important partners in educating your children, so we deeply appreciate your support!

Warmly,

Marina Cofield

EAST HARLEM SCHOLARS ACADEMY

  Rigor, Joy, and Deep Learning

East Harlem Scholars Academy is excited to celebrate the completion of week six of the school year! Our scholars are settling in beautifully and rising to meet the challenges of the classroom with energy, curiosity, and resilience.

Every day, our teachers and staff are creating learning experiences that keep students engaged, inspired, and supported. With guidance from i-Ready diagnostic data, lessons are thoughtfully designed to strike the right balance of challenge and support—ensuring that every scholar is growing, learning, and reaching their fullest potential.

Thanks to this focused and caring approach, our classrooms are buzzing with curiosity and excitement. Our scholars aren’t just attending school—they are thriving, building confidence, and discovering the joy of learning together.

EAST HARLEM SCHOLARS ACADEMY II

Routines for Student Success

East Harlem Scholars Academy II has been working to ensure our scholars receive the very best instruction. This year, we are laser-focused on making daily classroom routines even stronger and more consistent across all grades.

To help scholars stay on track, teachers are implementing a simple yet powerful change: they are consistently displaying key learning points on the Smart Board for students to reference. This small shift in classroom consistency allows all scholars to move through their day with confidence and focus completely on the learning ahead!

And because we know it cannot be all work and no play, in late September, dozens of East Harlem Scholars Academy II students took advantage of ices, playtime, and great weather at Central Park as a little reward for an excellent job completing all of their summer homework and summer reading.

EAST HARLEM SCHOLARS ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL

Everyday Counts, Every Mind Matters

East Harlem Scholars Academy High School spent the first few weeks of school anchoring school systems and making sure school spaces feel safe and joyful. This year, faculty and staff are focusing on the vision that every mind and every day counts toward success in school.

So far in October, scholars have had a real focus on their future and how college can and should be a part of it. This included a day trip to the Jacob Javits Center's SUNY College Fair and a trip to Villanova University in Pennsylvania. On October 9th, East Harlem Scholars Academy High School will be hosting our own First Annual College Fair. Scholars will be able to learn about the college application process and see what options are available to them for post-secondary success. RSVP CLICK HERE

OUT OF SCHOOL TIME

College Mentoring Program Kicks Off

We are excited to share that 35 dedicated volunteers have been matched with 35 incredible scholars from high schools across NYC, including our very own East Harlem Scholars Academy High School!

This is the heart of EHTP’s College Mentoring Program, building powerful one-on-one relationships that give students the guidance, encouragement, and resources they need to navigate the journey to college, stay on track to graduate, and confidently prepare for their future careers.

Together, our mentors and scholars are building pathways to success—and we couldn’t be prouder.

Robotics Team Members Win Con Edison Recognition

Congratulations to scholars Omar Flores and Eric Santi, winners of the Con Edison EV Battery Storage Contest for their outstanding design and marketing plan submissions! This is a fantastic achievement, and EHTP is proud to celebrate their creativity and hard work. Omar and Eric were recognized for their ingenuity by Con Edison and Harlem Council Member Dr. Yusef Salaam at a public ceremony at Harlem Hospital earlier this week.

The Power Monster, designed by Omar Flores, is a self-contained energy pillar that delivers renewable power for personal mobility and devices—ideal for urban streets and campuses.

The E-Ride Power Station is a battery charging dock that allows users to securely charge their e-bike and e-scooter batteries using renewable energy in a locker-style cabinet.

Thank you to Brian Green, Program Manager, OST, and Sebastian Gomez, Robotics Associate, for leading our scholars through the design and submission process for this contest.

After-School Programming Kicks Off

EHTP's after-school program is now officially open, providing enriching and supportive activities for scholars in every grade from K-12! . Our scholars have access to homework help, tutoring, while also exploring exciting passions like robotics, fencing, martial arts, and dance.

 EAST HARLEM TEACHING RESIDENCY

Mentors Meet Residents

The East Harlem Teaching Residency held its first mentor training of the year a few days ago. Mentors got to practice how to guide residents as they begin working with small student groups. They also refreshed how to check in regularly with residents and learned their first new skill of the year: showing clear examples, also called explicit modeling. It was a great chance for mentors to share ideas, learn from one another, and strengthen their support for residents.

The applications for the 26-27 Residency and Fellowships are LIVE. Anyone interested in the Fellowship can learn more and APPLY HERE.

Applications Are Open for EHTR
